Contactless card payment limit to increase to £100 in October

Shoppers in the UK will be able to spend up to £100 using contactless card payments from 15 October.

Customers using Apple Pay or Google Pay can already make contactless payments larger than £45 as neither provider sets a limit, but consumers using cards are restricted.

At the start of the pandemic, the maximum amount was increased from £30 to its current level of £45 to encourage shoppers to use contactless payments over cash. According to UK Finance, contactless payments have proved very popular with consumers during this time and an increasing number of transactions are being made using contactless technology. In May, contactless payments accounted for 49% of all credit card and 65% of all debit card transactions.

The increase to the limit will allow for greater flexibility for customers and faster checkout at shops and hospitality venues.
